Apple's iPhone - You Had Me at Hello...

Yesterday at Macworld 2007, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, announced one of the year most awaited and yet-again fantastic invention from Apple -- "iPhone" which combines the functions of an iPod, a phone and an Internet mobile communicator in one sleek and stylish device with 3.5-inch wide touch-screen and a single home button along with a built-in 2 mega pixel camera. Literally, you could do just anything from "iPhone" with 8 GB flash memory including making a phone call, surfing the net, sending an e-mail, listening to the music, watching the movie, playing game and the list goes on and on.

"iPhone" will be available in the States in June 2007 for the price of 599 US$ with 2 year Cingular contract. In Asia, we will have to wait until the year 2008.

Apple actually reinvents the phone. I just can't wait to be an owner of this ultimate digital device.

    Barcode Access

Have you ever seen a small box with strange barcode on the magazine advertisement? It's been widely used in Japan for a couple of years. Now, AIS has introduced a new service called "Barcode Access" to Thai mobile phone user. This service will enable those who have a phone powered with camera to be able to access associated wap site instantly without typing in a long and tiresome address. It's simple and easy to use. All you have to do is downloading a barcode access program and installing it in your phone, then you could just point and shoot at the barcode on any printed advertisement including billboards, magazines or even a computer screen to enter the associated wap site.

For more information (in Thai,) please check out mobileLIFE home page from AIS. Click here.

    Mobile Phone Numbers Multiplying

It's been a news since last week that our mobile phone number is about to get longer. That is so because the National Telecommunications Commission of Thailand (NTC) agreed to enforce a new mobile phone numbering system. From September 1, 2006 every mobile phone numbers in Thailand will be extend to 10 digits by replacing a prefix "0" with "08." For example, the number 0-xxxx-xxxx will become 08-xxxx-xxxx. Please note that fixed-line number (home and company phone) will remain the same (9 digits.)

We all will have a problem of replacing all mobile phone numbers in our phone contact lists to compile with the new numbering system. Gee! That's a load of tedious works unless you have a computer program to change the numbers for you. Besides, those who think they have a "beautiful" straight or repeating number might not be happy with the change. Well, we should look on the bright side of thing. At least, the number "8" is a lucky number for Chinese folks. Isn't it great to have this number in our phone number per se?

For more information, please check out the link from NTC by clicking here.

    iPod nano

Last week, I asked my friend from the States to buy an iPod shuffle 1GB for me. I wouldn't have done so, had I known that today Apple would release its new iPod product called "iPod nano." With almost the same functions as iPod photo, much more smaller size and affordable price (2GB for 199 USD and 4GB for 249 USD,) I would rather buy this new baby than "Life-is-random" without-screen iPod shuffle. Isn't it ironic? Life is ACTUALLY random for me when deciding to buy "shuffle" a week before "nano" was released. The motto of this story is that you would never know what will happen tomorrow...

Now, it's my love at the first sight for "nano" so I guess I should get one. The problem is what should I do with the newly bought and never been used "shuffle."

    IPSTAR* broadband satellite

Today at 5:20 a.m. local time in Kourou, French Guiana (or 3:20 p.m. in Bangkok,) Arianespace's Ariane 5 rocket successfully launched THAICOM 4 (IPSTAR) satellite into space. The satellite is owned by Shin Satellite Public Company Limited, the sole satellite operator in Thailand. IPSTAR is the forth satellite from Thailand in geostationary orbit, following THAICOM 1 in 1993, THAICOM 2 in 1994 and THAICOM 3 in 1997. It was built by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) in Palo Alto, California and set a world's record of the heaviest communications satellite ever built and launched with the weight of 6,485 kilograms. The satellite, with data transfer rate of 40 GB per second -- 20 times as much as other ordinary satellites, will provide broadband Internet access and multimedia services to 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

We will have to wait and see if IPSTAR could deliver the services as promised, well, with a reasonable price. I doubt...
