March 03 Art Thomya - AnyoneToday I went to a small get-together party of the former Chulalongkorn University English Club's member class of 1992 - 1994. In fact, it's one of our "EC-gang" (as we called our group) member birthday. The person I am talking about is Mr. Polkrit "Art" Thomya who has just turned thirty. Well, his birthday is on the second of March but everyone preferred to celebrate for him on Saturday rather than Friday. Thus, today is the day. I've known him since my first year in the university some many years ago as he was a sophomore at my faculty back then and we joined the "same" English Club. He is a talented singer with beautiful voice and won several music awards. He's shown a strong ambition to be a professional singer since day one I met him and I know he has a full potential to do so. All he need is a chance. If you couldn't wait for it to happen, you just have to make it happen - that's why he decided to go independent and released his first single called "Anyone" on his own budget. I am inspired by his strong passion to music and promised him I would try my best to support him. That's why I present you his home-made music video of the song "Anyone." Click on the MSN soapbox video below to watch the music video. You may find out more about him at his official web site (www.ArtThomya.com) and his myspace page at www.myspace.com/ArtThomya. Happy Birthday to you, P' Art. I hope your wish of being a professional singer comes true. February 12 OK Go - Here It Goes Again (Reprise)I wrote about the music video of this song 4 months ago (on October 5th, 2006 - click to read) without even knowing that it would be nominated for the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in the category of Best Short Form Music Video. Today, the result had been announced (click here to view the full list of winners) and this simply yet fantastic music video from OK Go is the winner. Congratulations to the band members and the video producers! Big hands for the creative idea. Again, I hereby present you with the link to the video at YouTube <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI>. To date, there are more than 11 million viewers and growing. Wow, that's amazing! Go OK Go! October 05 OK Go - Here It Goes AgainOK Go is an American rock band consisting of 4 members, namely, Damian Kulash (lead vocals and guitar), Tim Nordwind (bass), Dan Konopka (drums) and Andy Ross (keyboards and guitar.) The band gained popularity mainly because of its unique low-budget, one-take music video. In fact, it caught my attention when I saw 4 guys (later known as the members of the band) dancing choreographically on six treadmills in their one-shot music video called "Here It Goes Again." You have to see it to believe it. I have to admit that these guys are brilliant and whoever come up with the idea and direct this dance is bloody genius. Take a look at the video by yourself at YouTube <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI>. In fact, this video was viewed by over 1 million people on YouTube in the first 6 days and currently it can be seen on various music channels including MTV and Channel [V]. Visit OK Go's official website at <http://www.okgo.net/> June 29 I'm With StupidThis is a name of a song from British duo called "Pet Shop Boys" who has been in UK music industry since 1981. "I'm With Stupid" was the first commercially released single from their latest album "Fundamental," reaching number eight in the UK Singles Chart. Well, at first, I heard this song on the radio and didn't pay much attention until the hook line was sung. "Pet Shop Boys" is famous for their clever lyrics and this song is no exception. "Is stupid really stupid Or a different kind of smart?" Yeah, this is just one of several clever lines in the song. After some minor googling sessions, I realised that the song was meant to be a pun for an estranged relationship between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W. Bush (as suggested in Wikipedia and one of fan sites.) Well, there is also my personal remark for the song. That's why it could catch my attention. I'm With Stupid... March 15 Angela Aki - Kiss Me Good-Bye"Kiss Me Good-Bye" is the theme song of Final Fantasy XII, one of the most awaited Play Station 2 game. The song is performed by Angela Aki, a half Japanese (from her father) and half Italian-American (from her mother) singer. In fact, the song is available in 2 versions; the Japanese version for the regional release and the English version for the international release of the game. Angela wrote the lyrics for both versions of this song, while Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy music trademark, composed a wonderful tune for the song. The single is released in Japan on March 15, 2006 - a day prior to the release of the game. Being Final Fantasy tie-in, it is certainly a must-have item for collectors and fans of the game. The track listing of this single is as followed; 1. Kiss Me Good-Bye (Japanese Version) February 08 Mariah Carey and the 48th Annual GRAMMY® Awards - the ResultThe results were out and Mariah Carey won 3 Grammy Awards out of 8 nominations. Even though she didn't won the three major awards (Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year,) her performance of a medley of "We Belong Together" and "Fly Like A Bird" with Hezekiah Walker & The Love Fellowship Choir on the stage was incredibly fantastic and received a well-deserved standing ovation. Anyway, I felt sorry for Mariah that all the awards she won were announced in the pre-telecast ceremony and she didn't receive any awards during the live broadcast so we didn't even have a chance to watch Mariah's awards acceptance speech. Well, looking on the brighter side, just being able to watch Mariah's performance at the live telecast is enough. Mariah won in the following categories: Best Contemporary R&B Album # Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi Best R&B Song # Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together" J. Austin, M. Carey, J. Dupri & M. Seal Best Female R&B Vocal Performance # Mariah Carey - "We Belong Together" Mariah lost in the following categories: Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance # Aretha Franklin - "A House Is Not a Home" Best Pop Vocal Performance - Female # Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone" Song of the Year # U2 - "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." Record of the Year # Green Day - "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" Album of the Year # U2 - "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" The 48th Annual GRAMMY® AwardsThis is a reminder. You could catch the 48th Annual GRAMMY® Awards broadcast Live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on local television in Thailand at Channel 7 tomorrow from 8.00 AM onwards. Mariah Carey, who received eight nominations this year, will be among a list of performers. Will this year be another successful year for Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi," or would be it another nightmare for Mariah Carey with the most numbers of nominations and none awards won? (Remembering 1996 when MC was nominated for 6 categories and went home empty-hand.) December 08 Mariah Carey and the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards NominationsThe nominations for the 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards were finally announced today at Gotham Hall in New York City and Mariah Carey led the nominees with 8 nominations, tied with John Legend and Kanye West. The GRAMMY Awards is one of the most prestigious awards in the US music industry. (Well, ironically, it's so prestigious that an ordinary music company in Thailand adopted the name of the awards as its own name.) The 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. For viewer in the states, the show will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8:00 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). It seems that Mariah and GRAMMY Awards are in a different league. Even so, I hope that this year's 8 nominations would lead to an actual GRAMMY Award for Mariah to celebrate her comeback in style. We'll see... December 03 Mariah Carey - Get Your NumberUniversal Music (Thailand) has just released the third single of Mariah Carey called "Get Your Number" taken from her latest album "The Emancipation of Mimi." This could be mark as a special achievement for Mariah Carey in Thailand because there has never been more than two singles from any of Mariah's previous albums being released in Thailand. This single has the same tracklisting as the European version that was released earlier. Here is the tracklisting.
On the other note, I have talked with a CD shop assistant and got a confirmation that Universal Music (Thailand) will release "The Emancipation of Mimi : Platinum Edition" that contains both CD and a special DVD. This is a good news as fans in Thailand have been kept in the dark for this re-release information. The official release date printed on Universal Music (Thailand) sale guide handbook is December 16, 2005 with suggested retail price of 500 Baht. Unfortunately, the tracklisting of this Thailand re-release is the same as the US edition with only 4 music videos on DVD not including the new "Don't Forget About Us" video as in Japanese edition. November 23 Mariah Carey in American Music Awards 2005 (Revisited)The result for the 33rd Annual American Music Awards was out. Even though Mariah Carey led the nomination with 4 categories, she took home only one award for favorite soul/rhythm & blues female artist. Nevertheless, it clearly depicted Mariah's career comeback as the biggest selling female artist of all time, a true diva. Mariah opened the show with a glamorous performance of "Don't Forget About Us." Although there were some technical difficulties at first, Mariah managed to take control of the stage and delivered a marvelous song at last. At the end, the crowd cheered and honored Mariah with a long standing ovation. The first award of the night was indeed presented to Mariah. Accepting the award, she changed her costume from the sparkling spaghetti-stripe dress into an elegant black dress. Don't forget to catch the delayed tape of the show in Thailand on Channel 7 tonight at 11.25 PM. November 21 Mariah Carey in American Music Awards 2005The 33rd Annual American Music Awards will be held the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on Tuesday, 22 November 2005 (Pacific Standard Time.) Mariah is confirmed to perform at the ceremony which would be telecasted live by ABC Television (in the states.) Mariah Carey led the nominees for American Music Awards with four nominations including : Best Pop Album: The Emancipation of Mimi
Best Female Artist: Pop Best R&B Album: The Emancipation of Mimi Best Female Artist: R&B For the second year the American Music Awards will include the T-Mobile Text In Award among its honors. T-Mobile USA subscribers can vote for Mariah (soul/R&B) via text messaging. Everyone else can also cast a ballot online at AmericanMusicAwards.com As for fans in Thailand, we could catch delayed tape of the show from Channel 7 at 11.25 PM on Wednesday, 23 November 2005. Wow, I can't hardly wait to watch Mariah's performance. November 05 POP STARHirai Ken is one of famous Japanese singers whose music features most of contemporary R&B, jazz, funk and hip-hop style. His newest single has just been released on 26 October 2005 in Japan, after some 14 months from his previous single. It's called "POP STAR." The song features fast beat music and rhythm as Ken's trademark and style. Anyway, what is interesting about this song is its promotional video, or PV in short. I have just had a chance to watch this PV and it's certainly funny and well shot. In this video, Hirai Ken simultaneously portrays seven roles in the set that was originated from the famous "Ed Sullivan Show." This CBS television show is the longest running variety series in the American TV history. Back to the video, we could see a group of three singers (three Hirai Ken in three different styles) called "KEN" performing the song with some funny stuffed mascots (also Hirai Ken) dancing in the background and the host (again, it's Hirai Ken) of the show appreciating the song at the side of the stage. Finally, we see the producer (yes, it's indeed Hirai Ken!) comes and congratulates everyone at the end of the show. For the captures of this PV, please visit aqua_syun's blog (in Japanese) from where I got the information regarding this video. Thanks again, aqua_syunさん. October 30 Mariah Carey - Merry Christmas [DualDisc]The album was originally released in 1994 (11 years ago.) This year on October 25th, it was re-released in a new format - DualDisc, which is a double-sided disc containing regular CD on one side and an enchanted DVD on the other side. Mariah's legendary Christmas album is definitely worth the treat. The song "All I Want for Christmas Is You," which Mariah herself wrote for this album, has been very popular and could be considered as a classic Christmas song. Everyone might have heard of the song in many different versions, as it has been covered by Shania Twain and Samantha Mumba. The song was also featured in the film "Love Actually" by Olivia Olson. Aside from fully loaded DVD, there is a special treat for fans from Mariah in this re-release album. Mariah had recorded a new version of the song "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" and it's called the "Anniversary Mix." In the DVD, we are able to see a beautiful claymation music video of this new version of the song. Here are the track listings of this album: Disc: 1 [CD] 1. Silent Night 2. All I Want for Christmas Is You 3. O Holy Night 4. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) 5. Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) 6. Joy to the World 7. Jesus Born on This Day 8. Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town [Anniversary Mix] [PCM Stereo] Wow, I am sure this year's Christmas spirit will be even higher with Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas album. Don't you agree? October 14 Mariah Launches "The Emancipation of Mimi: Platinum Edition"I got an email from mariahcarey.com this morning and it's a good news. Mariah Carey is going to re-issue her latest album in the U.S. on November 15th. This re-release will recap all 14 tracks on the original album, which has sold more than 4 million copies in the states and over 6 million copies worldwide. The Platinum Edition will include 4 new tracks: "Don't Forget About Us," "So Lonely (One and Only Part 2,)" "We Belong Together (Remix,)" and "What It Look Like," featuring Jermaine Dupri. What is so special about this Platinum Edition is not only because of the new tracks mentioned above, but also because it is also available as a special deluxe limited edition two-disc (CD + DVD) package. This is the first time in the U.S. that there is a CD/DVD package for Mariah (it was available first in Japan for "The Emancipation of Mimi" original release.) The exclusive DVD will feature the full-length video clips of "It's Like That," "We Belong Together," "Shake It Off," and "Get Your Number" (featuring Jermaine Dupri, which will be making its U.S. debut on this DVD), plus a link to access the brand new video for "Don't Forget About Us." This is exciting. I just can't wait for the release of this Platinum Edition in Thailand. Hopefully, it would be a CD/DVD package as in the U.S., otherwise I would have to buy the U.S. imported version instead of the local one. Alas, this will be my third time buying "The Emancipation of Mimi" album - the first time is when it was released back in April, the second time is the Japan CD/DVD limited Edition and the third time will be this exclusive Platinum Edition. Anyway, I have never been bored with Mariah - my favorite artist of all time. October 06 matsu takako concert tour 2003 "second wave" on filmI received this DVD from a friend last week but I just had a chance to watch it last night. The DVD is recorded from a live concert at NHK Hall in Tokyo, Japan on November 23rd, 2003. Matsu Takako delivered a superb performance, especially in my personal favorite song "ほんとの気持ち (Honto no Kimochi)" which made me know her. Her crystal clear voice was full of power and was well coherent with a profession live music performance. A combination of wind instruments (trumpet and saxophone) and an accordion with a normal band made songs in the concert sounded totally different from those recorded in studio albums. Apart from singing, Takako herself also played various kinds of musical instruments such as a xylophone, a melodion and, lastly, an impressing piano solo in the concert encore. All in all, it's an enjoyable and memorable concert. This single-layered DVD contains 17 tracks from Matsu Takako's previous albums. Here is the track-listing. 01. 明日にくちづけを ~Encore~ The DVD also features a photo gallery and a short behind-the-scene footage (with only a background music "Welcome Back" playing.) The picture quality is average, but the sound (Japanese 5.1 channel) is excellent. 4 Stars out of 5 - highly recommend for Matsu Takako fan. September 27 Don't Forget About UsMariah Carey has just released a new track called "Don't Forget About Us." This newly recorded song was produced by Jermaine Dupri and Mariah herself. You could listen to this promising smash hit song exclusively at AOL Music! I just fell in love with this song. The beat and tempo of the music is just right. Mariah's lyrics and words in the songs have never failed me. I am sure this song would shine on Billboard single chart in the near future. August 03 Shake It OffThis is the third single from Mariah Carey's latest studio album "The Emancipation of Mimi" on Billboard Hot 100 Chart. On its first week on the chart, the song acquired "Hot Shot Debut" label, meaning that, among the new singles entering the chart that week, this song was in the highest position. This week, while the song "We Belong Together" is still hanging on the top spot of the chart for 10 weeks, "Shake It Off" is showing a high potential at Number 19, with "Greatest Gainer / Airplay" label on its third week on the chart. In fact, this single has not yet commercially released in the States, so the figure on the chart is purely based on the popularity, judging by air play, club play and digital download. The Music Video for this song was broadcasted worldwide on July 27th, 2005. There are many cameos and Mariah's personal jokes in the video. Some say that this video is a tribute to Mariah's previous works. I think this video is enjoyable, especially all those tidbits in the video, from the first scene with Mariah's appearance in the bathtub while singing the song, till the last scene when Mariah walks toward the evening sunset. July 26 Wings of WordsFor those who probably have no idea, "Chemistry" is the name of Japanese R&B male duo group. The duo consists of Kawabata Kaname (川畑 要) and Dochin Yoshikuni (堂珍 嘉邦.) They were the winner of Japanese talent show called "ASAYAN" held by SONY Music Japan in 2000. After the debut of the first single in 2001, the duo's popularity keeps increasing with more and more of Number 1 singles and albums on Japanese ORICON chart. In my opinion, the duo's name, "Chemistry," implies that their voices and music really have a good "Chemistry" together. "Wings of Words" is Chemistry's 15th and newest single to-date. In fact, the single is scheduled to be commercially released tomorrow (July 27, 2005.) The song is used as a new (and the 4th) opening theme for a popular Japanese animation called "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny." At first when I heard of this news, I was suspicious. The idea of Chemistry singing an opening theme for Gundam is weird because most of Gundam's opening songs fall out of Chemistry's characteristic. Anyway, when I had a chance to listen to this song, I liked it. "Wings of Words" sounds different from all Chemistry's previous singles with stronger beat and harder music, but the song still has a Chemistry's R&B feeling. The melody is not too fast and not too slow. The lyric is good and could easily be associated with Gundam's theme. You know the heart singing. The Wings of the words. 空は飛べないけれど翼ならあげよう それはもう一人じゃないと、君の孤独剥がす言葉 どんなペシミストも恋をして変わる 選んだ道がもし行き止まりなら、そこで迷えばいい Find out more about "Chemistry" at their official site: http://www.chemistryclub.net/ July 21 We Belong TogetherThis record-breaking song is Mariah Carey's sixteenth number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It proves that Mariah Carey is the most successful female artist to-date and ranked third on number 1 hit singles, only behind The Beatles (with 20 #1’s) and Elvis Presley (with 18 #1’s) in Billboard history. Currently, "We Belong Together" is still number 1 on the Hot 100 chart and on the week ending of July 30th, 2005 it will set a record of 9 weeks on the top of the chart. Even though there is no commercial released CD for this single in the states, it still shines on the chart with a huge volume of radio station's airplay and digital download impressions combined. Universal Music (Thailand) has released "We Belong Together" single since Tuesday (July 19th, 2005.) This is so strange because there are not many singles that were able to release in Thailand as the market here seemed to rely mainly on the album sales. As for Mariah, there would only be the first singles from each of her new albums that could be released as a single because they came out before the full albums were released and served as sample songs for everyone. For Mariah's latest album: The Emancipation of Mimi, the first single - "It's Like That" - has been released since March 2005. The release of "We Belong Together" as a commercial single here in Thailand marks a special treatment for the song with a special CD digipak package that can be folded out and reveal a white rose pop-up in the middle of the pack. This is one of a kind package that hasn't been feature anywhere in the world - of course, it would definitely be the precious collector's item. The suggested retail price of the CD single is only 150 THB. I suggest buying one while you still have a chance.
