September 04 The Happiness of Kati a.k.a. Kwam Suk Kong Kati (ความสุขของกะทิ)The winner of this year S.E.A. (South East Asian) Write award, Thailand's most prestigious literary honor, was announced on August the 31st, 2006. Selected from 64 submissions of novel works, the 10 finalists has been judged by the committee and it's definitely a difficult task to finally present the award to "The Happiness of Kati," a short novel written by a veteran translator Ngarmphan "Jane" Vejjajiva, which also won an award from England and was selected by the Junior Library Guild (USA) to be added in their prestigious "reading list" to recommend to the states-wide librarians. The Happiness of Kati tells a story of a nine-year-old girl named "Kati" who stays with her grandparents in a friendly neighborhood faraway from a hectic and busy city life. Kati is a clever and optimistic girl who contends with all aspects of her life except for one thing - she could hardly remember her mother who left her with her grandparents since she was only 4 years old. She always wonder why her mother left her and why haven't she ever seen her father. Chapters by chapters, the story reveals itself like the peeling of an onion layers by layers as we follow Kati through her unforgettable journey from the old fashioned house by the canal to a bungalow by the sea and an apartment in the big city. The readers would smile, laugh and cry along with Kati as the truth about her family emerges. In my opinion, this multi-award-winning short novel could be considered as a "gem" in modern Thai literature. The language and style used in the story is simple yet powerful with realistic descriptive narration. The multi-layered characters and a little mysterious story-telling with some plot-twists spice up the novel and make it unputdownable once start reading - at least in my case, I spent my easy Sunday afternoon reading this book straight from the first chapter till the last. I have to admit that I admired Kati's courageous way of thought and her optimistic point of view. This is truly a happiness in life. The story about family and discovery of your individual self while keeping good relationships with everyone around you is a universal theme. It's no wonder why "The Happiness of Kati" has been translated into 5 different languages and won several awards. However, the most important award the book received could be no other than the happiness it gave to the readers after finishing the book. All praises should go to the author. As one of the beginning quotations of a chapter in the book stated, I couldn't agree more that "the happiness of everyone around us is indeed our own happiness." P.S. There has already been a sequel of "The Happiness of Kati" under the title "Finding the Moon" and the third installment of "Kati" series will be published soon. June 23 Basic Circuit Theory - The journey ended here. Finally, the long-awaited "Basic Circuit Theory" textbook is on the shelf for sale at CU Book Center and various book stores just in time for the first Semester. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, this is the textbook I've helped my professor at Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Chedsada Chinrungrueng, editing and compiling for almost 3 years. The textbook would be recommended as a main companion for all second-year students in the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering at Chulalongkorn University because "Basic Circuit Theory" is one of the most important compulsory courses for the students in the aforementioned discipline. Writing a textbook is not as easy as writing an ordinary book. You have to be very careful in every facets. Even though we proof-read our manuscript for literally hundreds of times, we still found some mistakes in typing. Typo is hardly tolerable as it could lead to misunderstanding of concepts and destroy the fundamental purpose of the book. Well, I guess we should bare in mind that nothing in the world is perfect. Definitely, we will have all mistakes corrected in the revised edition, if there would ever be one. Look on the bright side of thing, I found the "real" textbook looked much more better than our manuscript. May be it's because I was sick of reading the manuscript over and over again. Well, whatever the reason is, I am very happy with this project and it somehow encourages me to work harder in the next textbook we are planning to write. Bring it on! P.S. Check out the detail of the book at Chulabook center home page. If you are interesting in buying it, you could also place an order on-line there. Click here. January 13 はだしのゲン a.k.a. Barefoot GenI have just finished reading the first of the ten-volume (Japanese version) of the comic called "Barefoot Gen," which I borrowed from the Japan Foundation Library a week ago. I started reading it to practice my Japanese reading skill. Even though I still don't have a high Japanese language proficiency to understand all of the content, I could grasp the main idea and information which the writer was trying to convey. The more I read, the more interesting it becomes. Eventually, I couldn't even put it down. It's addictive and educational. Barefoot Gen is written and illustrated by Keiji Nakazawa in 1973. He retold his memories of the Second World War and the destruction of Hiroshima through this comic book. The story is set in Hiroshima, Japan where the writer used to reside at the time of the War. The comic told a story of a seven-year-old boy named Gen who experienced and survived the atomic bomb explosion that led to the end of the War. In this first volume, we saw the live and hardship of Japanese people prior to the bombing. The story ended when the bomb was dropped on 6 August 1945 and Gen suffered the lost of almost all of his family members. We will see the aftermath bombing later in the next volume. I am looking forward to read it soon. P.S. There are 4 volumes of the English translated version of this comic series released in the States. You can check them out here. October 26 Diary 2006: Pets in Sa Pathum PalaceThis is a great gift idea for the coming Christmas and New Year festival. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has released her newest book in diary format entitled "Pets in Sa Pathum Palace," featuring pictures of all 21 dogs raised by the Princess in her palace. The Princess also hand-wrote the captions of all pictures and included some comments and tidbits of not only her dogs but also other animals living in the Palace, such as cats, ducks, geese, snakes and even millipedes. The diary is launched just in time to welcome the year 2006 which is the Chinese Year of Dog. I am sure it would become one of the best-selling books for the end of this year. I myself have reserved a copy of the book at Nai-in book store. October 13 "Chao Ngin" - Thailand S.E.A. Write Awards Winner 2005As I went to the BOOK EXPO Thailand 2005 last week, I met the author of the book at Matichon publisher's booth and I didn't let a chance of getting his autograph for the book pass by. Beside from his signature, he also wrote for me "We met each other because of the book." and yes, indeed, it's true. I've intended to write about this since last week but didn't do so until now that I finally finished reading this book. "Chao Ngin" is a short story collection written by Binlar Sankalakiri (the pen-name of a journalist named Wuthichart Choomsanit.) The book is selected as this year's winner of S.E.A. Write Awards for Thailand. Just look at the title of the book "Chao Ngin (เจ้าหงิญ)," you may wonder what it is all about. Why do the letters "ญ" and "ง" in Thai word "เจ้าหญิง" (which literally translated as "Princess" in English) switch places? In English, it is like you jumble the word as "Princses." I myself also wonder about the reason behind this weird and eye-rising title. However, once I finished reading the first chapter of the book, I started to realize what the writer is trying to say. At the end of the last page of book, I felt mesmerized. It is no wonder why the book got the awards. There are eight short stories of modern day fairy-tale in the book and each story (chapter) could be considered as an individual tale or all stories could be viewed together as a collection of stories within a big story. Reading each chapter Independently or altogether, you would definitely enjoy the book. The story is unpredictable and full of surprises. Just like all fairy-tales, in the end, even though it is not stated explicitly, you would always learn the moral of the story. The book reminds us all that there is always a bright side of life, which makes this bitter world of reality tolerable and beautiful. It's hard to say which one of these eight fantastic stories is my favorite, as I like them all. However, If I have to pick one, I would say that my favorite story is "the eighth color of the rainbow." October 07 BOOK EXPO Thailand 2005 & World Book Capital CampaignToday I went to the 10th "BOOK EXPO Thailand 2005" at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. This year theme is "Knowledge beyond boundaries." The fair was crowded - as always because it was held in October which is a school-off period. The publishers line-up is quite the same as previous book fairs, with some new-comers. The organizer boasts that this book fair sees the most publishers ever been. One of the high-lights in this fair is the campaign for promoting Bangkok to be selected as a "World Book Capital" for the year 2008. Everyone is encouraged to write a short message or draw a picture on a specially designed Cu-Book (pronounced as "Q-Book" and originated from the word "cubic" and "book") expressing one's enthusiasm on book and book's reading in general. This so-called Cu-Book, which has a shape of small cubic box, will then be used to decorate a big model of city of Bangkok. This model will be used as a presentation to the selection committee of the World Book Capital to decide whether Bangkok is suitable for this prestigious title or not. I myself also dedicated one Cu-Book for the campaign and it's the box number 1154. I wonder how many Cu-books will there be at the end of the campaign. July 20 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Revisited)It seemed that I just couldn't get enough with Harry Potter craze by now. After days of reading this book continuously till the last page, all you need is someone to discuss the content of the book in detail. Anyway, there are still few people who manage to finish this book.
Well, finally, I found an interesting web-site to browse through. That's http://mugglethai.com where there are huge array of information and discussion board to fulfill my need for a moment. From there, I also got a hold of a beautiful picture which is used as a full cover for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince U.S. Deluxe Edition of Scholastic Inc. The cover is illustrated by Mary GrandPré who skillfully depicted scenes after scenes in this book and all previous Harry Potter U.S. Edition books. Here is the picture of the Deluxe Edition's cover. Click to view it in full size.
July 19 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Finale)Finally, I have finished reading "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." Four days after its release date is not a bad record, though I planned to finish it within the weekend but the circumstance provided it to be not possible. Anyway, after nights of short sleep, I managed to reach the final page of the book just a while ago, and after the last word of the book, came an exclamation of mine; "What the heck is going on?" followed by; "It couldn't be ended like this, I demand to read book 7 now." You would understand my feeling of surprise and disbelief if you finished the book like I did. So far, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has provided me with enjoyment, funny remarks here & there, some love stories, and darker plots with an element of surprise, which I thought was lack in Book 5 but now manage to have effect in full swing in this installment. I am sure some sensitive readers would cry for the lost in this book, It is so... Oh, well, I guess I wrote too much. I didn't want to spoil the fun and excitement from those who still haven't finished the book. However, be warned, because it would be so hard to accept how J.K. Rowling manage her characters. I am sure there would be tones of questions spread around the readers communities worldwide regarding the situation in the book and the speculation would be so high for Book 7. As most of us know that Rowling said long ago that she had already finished the last chapter of Book 7 some time ago and it was safe with her, how she manage to continue the story from the way Book 6 ended we never know. That's to be find out when Book 7 release and I wonder when. I just can't wait to read it. Ps. As for the question of who the "Half-Blood Prince" is, it will be not relevant once you finished the book. Some of readers may guess correctly, but I guess that would not be important anymore. July 16 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceJuly 16, 2005 is the day that Harry Potter's fans from around the world are waiting for. It's the release date of the long-awaited "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the sixth book of the series and the one before the promised final. I have reserved the book in advance months ago at Chulalongkorn University Book Center, because there was the best offer based on price of the book available at that time (680.00 THB for the US edition from Scholastic Inc.) and it's convenient for me to pick up the book there anyway. However, I found out later that other book stores announced a special price for the book on the first day of release as low as 595.00 THB for walk-in customer without any pre-order. What's done is done and I couldn't cancel the book reservation at CU Book Center as I had already paid for the book in advance. Today I went to CU Book Center to pick up the book late in the afternoon. (Well, I planned to go there as early as possible but because of the late night karaoke yesterday, [read here] I couldn't wake up early as planned.) To my surprise, there was still a lot of people buying the book. When I finally got the book, I also received CU Book VIP member card for free and a gift voucher worth 100.00 THB for buying anything at CU Book Center. Well, finally the reservation of the book still earn me the best offer possible. Regarding the book, I still haven't finished half of it. My reading speed today seem to be too slow. May be it is because of my lack of sleeping. Anyway, hopefully I will finish the book before going to work on Monday morning. Well, there is still more than 24 hours to go, but I need some sleep now to recharge my brain for digesting the book tomorrow. I still wondered who is this mysterious "Half-Blood Prince." I guess I will find out soon.
